Stand Down is a term derived from the military, referring to a period of rest and re-supply for exhausted combat troops. Applied to our homeless initiative, Stand Down describes a volunteer effort to impact and positively change the lives of homeless veterans and their families. The Stand Down purpose is to relieve veterans of their isolation, expose them to social services, and raise community awareness. Once these men and women served our country with honor, now they live without dignity. A three day program designed to consolidate service providers in a single location with access to shelter, food, medical and mental health care, legal aid, clothing, barbers, and counseling. This non-traditional program has been effectively reproduced across this nation since its inception in 1988.
