There are no public records on how many Gold Star Families there are. Over 6,000 United States service members have died in the conflicts within Iraq and Afghanistan alone. The Gold Star label button is issued to immediate family members of those who lost their lives in the defense of democracy during WWI and WWII, and any subsequesnt armed hostilities in which the United States became engaged. It is also issued for Act of Terrorism deaths.
