Stand Down is a term derived from the military, referring to a period of rest and re-supply for exhausted combat troops. Applied to our homeless initiative, Stand Down describes a volunteer effort to impact and positively change the lives of homeless veterans and their families. The Stand Down purpose is to relieve veterans of their isolation, expose them to social services, and raise community awareness. Once these men and women served our country with honor, now they live without dignity. A three day program designed to consolidate service providers in a single location with access to shelter, food, medical and mental health care, legal aid, clothing, barbers, and counseling. This non-traditional program has been effectively reproduced across this nation since its inception in 1988.

'Grizz' Shanaman | Rest in Peace my Friend
Lou - I sit and look at you But I do not see you I see your tattered clothes, Torn skin, matted hair, But I do not see you You sense the fear You look down But then you look at me You see me The days turn into months, The months into years I see you I look into your eyes There is only gentleness Consistent gentleness Then the call about you You are gone The tears come and will not stop The sorrow is deep Where does this sorrow come from I ask Then I know I have carried you in my heart All these years Silently in my heart My tears are for you You remain silently in my heart. Homelessness is the growing heartache of our cities. This situation of life faces thousands in the Philadelphia area. Approximately one-third of those affected are veterans. Of the 250,000 homeless veterans nationally, as many as 3,000 could be located in the Greater Delaware Valley Region. Most are single males and 90% are high school graduates. Progress is often slow, made in small, steady steps. We beileve one of these steps is Stand Down.
