''We Will Never Forget''
Operation Iraqi Freedom – Captured May 12, 2007
On May 12, 2007 while on a patrol in Mahmoudiya, Delta Company, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, was ambushed. This area is 20 miles southwest of Baghdad and was known as the ‘triangle of death’. Four Soldiers were killed in the ambush: Sgt. 1st Class James D. Connell Jr., 40, of Lake City, TN.; Pfc. Daniel W. Courneya, 19, of Nashville, MI.; Pfc. Christopher E. Murphy, 21, of Lynchburg, VA.; and Sgt. Anthony J. Schober, 23, of Reno, NV.; and three soldiers were captured. Private Joseph Anzack, SSG Alex Jimenez, and SPC Byron Fouty. On May 24, 2007 Private Joseph Anzack of Torrance, CA. body was found in the Euphrates River south of Baghdad. SSG Alex Jimenez, 25, of Lawrence MA.; and SPC Byron Fouty 19, of Waterford, MI. were subsequently classified as Prisoners of War – Missing in Action.
On July 9, 2008, remains were found near the city of Jurf es Sakhr, Iraq, which were believed to belong to SSG Alex Jimenez, and SPC Byron Fouty. Upon official examination, these remains were positively identified. Their official date of death is July 8, 2008.
On this day, February 17, 2009, we render honors to these gallant Soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for Our Freedom.
